Working your personal style at prom, homecoming, family functions, special dates, holidays, big birthdays, or your best friend’s wedding isn’t as hard as it seems. Pair a drop-dead dress with a funky scarf. Match oversized vintage pearl drop earrings with simple gown. Pile on pearl necklace to spice up a strapless dress. Remember: Big night out can be about trying out “iconic” looks-classically elegant, glam rocker, red-carpet starlet-without overhauling your whole wardrobe.
If you are attending a special event, the invitation may indicate a clothing/dress code. If it doesn’t, it’s a good idea to call the event planner or someone who’s attended before, to check what’s expected. When in doubt dress a little more formal.
Here are some tips for hassle-free special event style:
1. Get creative with the dresses you can own. If you have long grown that you don’t wear anymore, think about having it hammed to a cocktail to knee length. Look for beaded tops that you can throw over a dress you already own to change the look altogether. Chances are no one will notice that you’ve worn that dress before. And of your close friends do. They’ll be impressed with how you’ve changed the look with your inventive style.
2. Make sure your outfits is right for the occasion! What it might be fun to rock out with a dress decorated with funky safety pins at the school dance, it’s not the best choice for a family wedding—especially if you upset the bride in picture!
3. It’s tempting to spend a fortune on your outfit, but resist the urge. We know how important special events can be. But the splurge factors have gotten a little out of control. Be smart with your spending and but the things that you might be able to wear again. Like gold silver shoes instead of pumps dyed to match your bright-blue dress that will sit the closet for the rest of eternity/ or a beaded handbag that can be used year after year, not just one night only.
