Getting started in jewellery making can be costly. Many jewellery tools designed specifically for the working of precious metals and are consequently expensive. When buying tools for jewellery making you should buy the best you can afford. There are of course limits to one’s budget, and money saved on some tools can be wisely spent on other better-quality ones. Never economise on shears and cutters. The cheaper ones are often made of inferior steel and a cutting tool that does not hold an edge is close to useless. Look out for older secondhand tools as these are often superior in quality to the equivalent new items.
It is very easy for a beginner to spend unwisely. As you gain experience and become more certain of your needs and of your continuing commitment to the craft, you can replace your homemade or cheaply acquired tools with greater confidence.
